What Is Paintless Dent Repair, and Is It Right for Your Car?

Paintless dent repair (PDR) fixes minor dents without sanding, filling, or repainting — making it faster and more affordable than traditional bodywork. It works best on small, shallow dents where the paint hasn't cracked. Not every dent qualifies, but when it does, PDR can save you time and money.

If you've got a small dent from a parking lot mishap, hail, or a stray shopping cart, you may have heard that paintless dent repair (PDR) can fix it without a trip through the paint booth. It's a real technique — but it isn't right for every situation.

How Paintless Dent Repair Works

PDR is exactly what it sounds like: technicians use specialized tools to access the back side of a panel and gently massage the metal back into its original shape. Because the paint and clear coat are never disturbed, there's no sanding, filling, or repainting involved. Done correctly, the panel looks like the dent never happened.

When PDR Is a Good Fit

PDR works best on dents that are small, shallow, and haven't cracked or chipped the paint. Common candidates include hail damage, minor door dings, and small dents from low-speed bumps. Because there's no paint or filler work required, PDR is typically faster and less expensive than traditional collision repair.

When PDR Won't Work

Not every dent qualifies. If the paint is cracked, chipped, or scratched at the site of the dent, PDR isn't an option — once the paint's integrity is compromised, repainting is necessary. Dents located near the edge of a panel, on sharp creases, or in hard-to-reach areas (like near a panel seam) can also be difficult or impossible to fix with PDR. Larger dents that have stretched the metal usually require traditional dent repair and paint work instead.

How to Know Which One You Need

The only way to know for sure is to have it looked at in person. A technician can assess the size, depth, and paint condition of the dent and tell you honestly whether PDR will get the job done — or whether traditional repair is the better route.
